The Somali Salvation Forum, which is united by some former leaders and opposition politicians, has opposed the Federal Government’s approach to selecting members of the Independent Human Rights Commission.

The opposition accused the FHR of violating constitutional and legal procedures, particularly Articles 41 and 111B of the Interim Constitution and Law No. 16 of 2016.

A press release issued by the Forum stated that the selection of members of the Commission should have been based on a fair, transparent process, and free from political interference,

but now it appears that the Commission is being used for personal gain. They also noted that Villa Somalia is clearly involved in interfering in the selection process.

The Salvation Forum called for:

1. To immediately suspend the appointment of the commission until it is ensured that a legal process is followed in accordance with the constitution.

2. That the Presidency and the Government should withdraw their hands from the selection of the Commission.

3. That Somali citizens with talent, reputation and integrity should be given opportunities to compete for the Commission members in a transparent manner and in front of the media.

4. That the international community, civil society and human rights organizations should be vigilant to prevent the new Commission from becoming one aimed at special interests.

Finally, they called on the federal government, state governments, civil society, journalists and the international community to closely monitor the selection process of the Commission, and ensure that it complies with the Constitution and Law No. 16.
